  • VistaSquad Meeting 17 Sep 2008

Well an interesting evening not quite to plan, just like to say a  quick thank you to both Ray and Ravi for stepping up and hosting an impromptu Q & A session for this evenings DEV Talk.

And at last thanks to Viral Tarpara http://blogs.technet.com/Tarpara , we are all now painfully aware that we fall into the category of Geek. An interesting talk in which Viral described the modern day Geek and how he or she have evolved through the ages into the perceived leaders in the field of IT and all things gadgetry.

  • Engineering Windows 7

New Blog site, maybe worth keeping an eye on for info on the future developments of Microsofts next

    incarnation.

  • Citizens on Patrol

Another great turn out so thanks to everyone that turned up. (& Microsoft for hosting) I hope you all enjoyed both these evenings  presentations.

What's new in Silverlight Beta 2
    (Mike Ormond, Microsoft)

    Intro to Live Mesh
    (Paolo Barone, Microsoft)
    Live Mesh intro

Thanks guys, both these presentations were full of useful info and some great questions and interaction from the group as well.

I particularly like the idea of Live Mesh and the ability of being able to sync all my important documents between my devices so no matter were I am or what I am doing I will have access to them.

It would be even better in the future if they were able to include a remote boot feature so I don’t have to leave my main pc on all the time. (the green theme running here) but I’m sure there will be many new great features included as this product is fully launched and people start to integrate their life styles into the cloud more.

Looks like our next meeting is also lining up to be just as interesting so stay tuned to  Vistasquad and details will be posted shortly.

  • Project VistaSquad

Well this might not be one of my best ideas to date but here goes!

Over a few pints down my local, chatting with friends, actually listening to them whinnying on about Windows Vista's pros and cons, their main grippes seemed to always fall back on the amount of resources and hardware Windows Vista requires to run and the fact they have to go out and spend their hard earned money on Dual or Quad core machines to feel the full benefits.

So project VistaSquad was born, the idea to build a usable pc on a tight budget while also being environmental sound and reuse old pc parts.

    1. To prove a point that Windows Vista does not require the latest and most up to date hardware.

    2. Everyone else is jumping on the green banner so why not project VistaSquad. Old pc’s still run well and with a bit of thought and time can and should be used to their full potential.

So here goes, over the next few weeks I will try and scrounge, blag or (buy cheap, if I have too) parts to build an ultimate pc that can run Windows Vista.

I will keep you posted on the journey to Project VistaSqards birth, through the forum and also in the photo gallery.

Please feel free to comment on either the insanity of this endeavour or my own, or please feel free to post image and info on your own hardware that you run Windows Vista on.

  • Windows PE & Microsoft's Malware Removal Starter Kit

I’ve recently been playing with the Windows PE boot environment and found a really good collection of information and free guides from Microsoft.
So I thought I would give some of the ideas a go, I have followed the Malware Removal Starter Kit

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/security/guidance/disasterrecovery/malware/default.mspx

This is a great guide and well planned out, helping you build a customized pre boot environment designed to tackle worms, viruses and many forms of malicious spyware. Easily completed in about an hour including downloading the free tools required via Google etc.

The guide helps you become familiar with the Windows PE environment and Imagex controls utilising some of the following free tools to help clean and manage infected computers without having to boot into infected Operating System.

    Avast! Virus Cleaner

    McAfee AVERT Stinger

    Microsoft Software Removal Tool

    Spybot-Search & Destroy

    Drive Manager

    System Spec

This then is built into a bootable CD-Rom and can be used on any pc with any O/S as long as it has a minimum of 512MB of RAM installed.

As I’m sure you guys and girls are all pretty busy, so I created a custom image especially for Vistasquad that boots with our logo. The ISO is downloadable from here.

     http://www.vistasquad.co.uk/assets/pebootdisk/WinPE_Tools.iso

Just put it in your cd-rom (remember to set Bios to boot from cd-rom) and once launched use the cmd prompt to navigate to the X:\tools\dir and away you go. This has both USB and mouse support so you should be able to transfer and save data in the worst of cases onto an external hard drive.

    Have fun.

  • The Fellowship of the Ring Photos

I've just posted the photos for our last meeting held on the 16th July.

Apologies for the quality they were taken using a XDA II phone, main camera is still away being fixed after dropping it.

  • The Fellowship of The Ring Evening Event

What a great evening two fantastic presentations, and what a fantastic turn out from over 100 sign ups to well over fifty people turning up with a few more IT Pros than normal, (come on guys and girls we really need a good showing way to many developers!)

Our biggest and best event so far so thanks from us all and thanks again for your support, hopefully you all had a good evening.

The 2 presentations were as follows

Mike Taulty from Microsoft on LINQ to XML

And Matt McSpirit on What’s New In Windows Server 2008

Both presentations were highly interesting and some great content, I especially found the info on Hyper-V and Server Core of particular interest, Thanks Matt

Thanks again goes to Microsoft for Hosting and supplying the much needed Pizza and also thanks to both the presenters and everyone for turning up. This was most by far the best meeting to date and long may it continue. Thanks should also go to Ray and Ravi for their continued hard work and organisational skill for which VistaSquad would not be what it is. Thanks Guys.

Photos to be uploaded later to day.

  • The Fellowship of the Ring

Wow outstanding over 94 places taken up for tonight’s meeting. Good work all!

That’s fantastic I look forward to meeting some new faces as well as seeing the familiar ones.

Hopefully we have a few more IT Pro's tonight so we can finally give the Dev. guys a run for their money.

Looking forward to it. See you all there!

    Regards

  • Going Green

Well I must say this seems to be the latest buzz word, everyone seems to be cashing in, almost as good as only 3% fat, sugar free etc only when you read the fine print do you notice that they have been very crafty in their names and discriptions.

So just how green is your Windows Vista machine, Microsoft seems to think it is so check out their new enviroment websites.

    http://www.microsoft.com/environment/

    http://www.microsoft.com/environment/business_solutions/articles/vista_powering_down.aspx

    http://green.msn.com/Articles/article.aspx?aid=3

Maybe its time to read the small print and do your bit too. Just check to see if there are any hidden preservatives first!

  • Vista Squad meeting "The Wrath of Khan"

I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for the great turn out last night, probably our biggest meeting to date.

Also a big Vista Squad thanks goes to both Stephen Lamb and Giorgio Sardo for their great presentations, which were both entertaining and enlightening.

We are still a bit short on the IT Pro front though so come on guys and girls don’t be shy sign up and join in the fun.

  • Vista Squad meeting “A New Hope” Tuesday 27th May

Well another excellent and well organised evening hosted at the Microsoft’s London Office.

This evening’s events included two talks first on ADO.NET Entity Framework by Marcus Tillett and the second on Softgrid (Microsoft’s Application Virtualisation) by Aaron Parker. Both presentations were great with a good amount of demo’s rather than the over used PowerPoint, so thanks goes to you both.

Also thanks goes to everyone that turned up, with well over 30 of you guys attending, a good number great for chatting & networking during the breaks, although that said we are short on IT Pro’s (where are you all?)
